KERSTEN MEMORIAL PILLAR & DOWNTOWN EXPERIENCE
Discover the story of Paramaribo, one step at a time.
Welcome to one of the most fascinating corners of downtown Paramaribo.
Standing here, at the intersection of the historic Domineestraat and Steenbakkerijstraat, you are surrounded by more than three centuries of Surinamese history. This neighborhood has witnessed the rise of trade, the arrival of missionaries, the struggle for freedom, devastating city fires, and the transformation of Paramaribo into the vibrant capital it is today.
For generations, Domineestraat was known as the most fashionable street in Suriname. Locals affectionately called this area “Krasje,” a name derived from the famous Krasnapolsky stores and a symbol of style, elegance, and city life. Walking through these streets today, you can still experience the charm of old Paramaribo through its historic wooden buildings, galleries, churches, and bustling city atmosphere.
Although this street lies just outside the official UNESCO World Heritage zone, it forms an important part of the historic character that makes Paramaribo one of the most unique cities in the Caribbean.
THE KERSTEN MEMORIAL PILLAR
The monument beside you is known as the Kersten Memorial Pillar, one of Paramaribo’s most remarkable historical landmarks.
It was unveiled in 1968 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of C. Kersten & Co., one of Suriname’s oldest and most influential companies. The pillar stands on the very site where the original Kersten tailor shop once operated; a business founded not only to support trade but also to finance missionary work throughout Suriname.
Designed by Dutch artist Nicolaas Wijnberg, the monument tells the story of Suriname through a series of bronze relief panels.
As you walk around the pillar, you will discover scenes depicting:
The arrival and work of the Moravian missionaries (Hernhutters)
Christoph Kersten and the early years of entrepreneurship in Suriname
The development of Paramaribo’s commercial center
The famous Kersten bakery and tailor shop
The fight against slavery and the breaking of chains during Emancipation in 1863 (Keti Koti)
The growth of local businesses and community development
At its base, the monument displays the motto that guided the company for generations:
“Work and Evangelization.”
The images of a Bible and a cash register symbolize a unique combination of faith, entrepreneurship, and social responsibility that helped shape Surinamese society.
A STORY OF FAITH, TRADE AND FREEDOM
The story of the Kersten Memorial is closely connected to the history of the Moravian Church, known locally as the Evangelische Broedergemeente (EBG).
The Moravian missionaries arrived in Suriname during the 18th century and established their mission headquarters just a short walk from here. Their work focused on Indigenous peoples, enslaved Africans, and later the wider Surinamese community.
Nearby stands the historic Great City Church (Grote Stadskerk), affectionately called “Mama Kerki” by locals. This church played an important role during one of the most significant moments in Surinamese history: the abolition of slavery. On July 1, 1863, celebrations took place both inside and outside the church as enslaved people officially gained their freedom.
The pillar captures this powerful moment through one of its most striking reliefs: broken chains representing emancipation and hope.
A CITY SHAPED BY RESILIENCE
Downtown Paramaribo has faced many challenges throughout its history.
In 1821, a devastating fire swept through large sections of the city, destroying hundreds of homes and businesses. Flames approached this very neighborhood, threatening the surrounding buildings and churches. Yet much of the area survived and continued to grow, becoming an important center of commerce and daily life.
The streets around you became home to merchants, artisans, churches, schools, and businesses that helped build modern Suriname.
FROM KERSTEN TO TODAY
For nearly 250 years, the Kersten name remained deeply connected to Suriname’s economic and social development.
The historic Kersten department store eventually became a landmark of downtown Paramaribo. Although ownership changed over the years, the memorial pillar was preserved as a protected monument, ensuring that future generations can continue to learn from its story.
Today, the values associated with the Kersten legacy—innovation, reliability, community, and entrepreneurship—remain an important part of Suriname’s heritage.
